While preparing to place an order for a furniture rental, I was reminded of a party I planned years ago. This was for an engagement party that involved the joining of two very unhappy, poorly matched people who were preparing to torment each other for a lifetime. It was so apparent that they were not a good couple, and I was feeling bad to be a part of their union planning.

Much to my relief, at the gathering some old friend of the bride to be got sloshed and caused quite a ruckus. Normally, this ends in chaos, and or tears. However, in this instance what transpired was comical. Apparently the mother of the betrothed saw this as her chance, and took it. After pulling the drunken girl aside, she convinced her she was the only person who could save her daughter, and all she had to do was tell her that everyone actually thought the marriage was an awful idea. The girl did just that, on a microphone in front of everyone. While it seems harsh, the point was made, the engagement ultimately dissolved, and a collective sigh of relief taken by all.

Since, the two have parted ways, and from what I understand, at least one has found real happiness. As for the friend, she has not quite lived that evening down, but the mother remains eternally grateful. I on the other hand am pleased to be ordering furniture for a simple exhibition, and not an event involving emotions.
